Inspired by my ongoing experiment with Twitter, I took a few spare moments with PhotoBooth and made myself a photoTweet.

how much?

The semester is finally drawing to an end! As school assessments are being finished up, I’m left with feelings of relief and relaxation — and anticipation for our upcoming holiday trip to Brisbane.

deafCardAs I’ve been sitting at my desk much more than normal, I couldn’t help but notice and wonder about something we picked up on our last trip to Sydney. While waiting for the ferry at Manly, we were approached by a casually dressed woman who very pleasantly held out her card. Once you’ve taken it from her, you’re already caught by her trap. She stands there silently as you read the words “Pay Any Price” and glance at her sad, eager face — the oversized smiley undoubtedly brings in a nice pocketful of cash for this deaf woman, I thought after we shelled out money for two. I couldn’t help but wonder if she was even deaf. Who’s to say that this isn’t some clever housewife with a box full of these cards in the boot of her Corolla who occasionally enjoys making a little extra income and found an easy way to do it?

Then again, if she is deaf, she’s obviously capable enough of producing these cards for herself, and I’ve yet to run across any other deaf people who weren’t able to persevere in the business world despite their disability. There’s no reason for her to be on the Manly Wharf other than to make an easy buck by appealing to people’s sympathy.

And then I wondered when I became such a cynic.
